Supposed great fishing on the Missouri right now. With so many fish below Holter, it is an alleged side show. Let's all remember that it isn't "our river", I think it is time the commercial guys show a little bit more respect to wade anglers. I don't give them the whole river, but I do give waders a seemingly disproportionately wide berth in comparison to other commercial users.

The Missouri River is going to be in fantastic shape next season. With nearly 7000 trout per mile over 10" near Craig, these numbers are record setting. We fish over 30 miles of water on the Missouri, and a couple of hundred more miles on other area waters. Many days we never see another boat or angler. I only hire a couple of other guides, and when we are full, we are full.

It seems as though the water managers are trying to find the right flow on the Missouri. They also are doing some scheduled maintenance on various Dams. It would be my amateur opinion that the Missouri River should stay high for two reasons; big water will support our record setting trout population, and with lots of water in Canyon Ferry Reservoir coupled with La Nina conditions we could still see more flood conditions. Winter is not close to over, in like a lamb, out like a lion?
With so many people claiming high probability of low water conditions next year, a contrarian probably has good odds.

With snow headed our way, it looks like the dry warm spell will be over for a bit. Hopefully Craig, Mt doesn't start to resemble Cordova, Ak. Call now for the best guides, when we are booked, we are booked. Not all Missouri River experiences are the same, your time is valuable, come fish with the Pro's. Like one of our top guides says; "It's hard to soar with eagles, when you flock with turkeys." I handle all bookings personally, if I weren't proud of our services, I wouldn't put my name on it.

Without substantial snow throughout most of our drainage, I have to ponder, will 2012 be a reprieve from historically high water? Who knows? I sure don't.
If you go fishing with the "other guys" you will probably be fishing under bobbers in a crowd regardless of conditions. My phone is ringing, and my first trips of the year are less than four months away. Book now for April, July, and September.
Choose your guide carefully as not all Missouri River experiences are the same. Call now!!!!! If we are fully booked, I will say no, rather than scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, annually shocks and counts Trout from two different one mile sections of the Missouri River below Holter Dam. The top graph represents the numbers of Brown and Rainbow Trout over ten inches near the tiny hamlet of Craig, MT. The second graph represents the Brown and Rainbow Trout near the Pelican Point section.
These numbers don't really point out anything that wasn't already common knowledge in my circle. The Missouri currently has a tremendous population of Rainbow trout, add to that; wonderfully prolific hatches, great scenery, reasonable and diverse accommodations, and expert patient guides and you truly have a world class combination. Many of our clients have fished all over the world, and continue to fish the Missouri year after year. Choose wisely, as not all Missouri River experiences are the same.

Looks like the season will extend for a tiny bit longer. I never would tell someone to come to Montana specifically to fish in November. April? Sure. Mid to late October? Of course. However, it is highly unlikely to have conducive baetis weather in November. The Merganser's may tell you differently, but it is wise to wait at least 4 or 5 months for good fishing. We already have lot's of bookings in April. If you want to fish tomorrow, I've got an ace guide living in Craig.

Stay in touch, I will be tying flies, writing emails, and hopefully throwing at black finned devils before too long.

The Missouri fished great right up to the closing bell. I have put the boat away, and am available daily via phone and email to plan next years fishing. Ridiculous dry fly and streamer fishing this fall, while sight fishing emergers was also fantastic. Not too many slow days, can't wait till April.

Fish are starting to rise. It is amazing what you see if you take your eyes off the bobber. Why lob slop rigs all day, when you can catch a couple of big ones with real flies? Decent nymphing yesterday, the Dearborn River is still dumping mud. Hopefully with less rain in the forecast we can count on the Dearborn dropping below 1000 cfs. The flows into Canyon Ferry Reservoir are higher than the flows coming out for the first time all year.

The Missouri is fishing well with Nymphs, and is tough with every other method. I just hunted heads for two days straight and fell back on solid nymphing every day. My new boat is awesome, here are some more photos. I'm guiding for the next three days on the Missouri River, should be some pretty good stuff.

The Nymphing near Craig, Montana for the past three days started out good and ended today at very very good. We had a bug that was a very good producer, Streamer fishing is slow even if you know where to throw them. We did not see a fish really rise for three days. Maybe tomorrow?????

In reality it is a damn mess out there, but we were able to avoid the crowds. Given the snow early this winter in the high country, I never told anyone to come at this time. It seems as though the bureua of reclamation is doing a good job this year at managing our flows. I'll have some new photos and video loaded tomorrow

After a bright sunny weekend, the weather looks pretty typically spring. Thunderstorms today, but getting better mid week. Craig, MT still has a lot of availability for May and early June, should be at the very least fantastic nymphing, but water levels seem stable in the near term.

Sackin' em Up!!!! Client Caught dry fly fish, we had some ups and downs on this trip, but given scizo weather patterns did quite well on the Missouri. Now is not the time to be a bank hugger!!!!!! Highly unsettled weather pattern yesterday, but fishing was good nonetheless. Small drys, nymphs, and streamers all produced nice trout. Photos are on their way. No spawning trout were targeted, and we weren't fishing egg colored and shaped flies, wish that could be said river wide. No anglers or guides should be targeting spawning rainbows right now, and all of our tributaries should be closed for a couple of hundred yards downstream. If your standing or rowing around below tributaries, fishing flies like hot beads or rainbow czech, you might as well be fishing in a children's pond.

We are experiencing a great little window of good dry fly fishing right now. I have a lot of availability, but have been sending quite a few emails about the good fishing.

Very good angling yesterday on the Missouri, I'm back out today. The water temps on the Missouri jumped a little bit, and probably explain the nearly insane fishing we had yesterday. We all rated it as very good, but, when water temp and velocity (and wind) were taken into consideration I would say it was excellent.

I recently bought a new raft frame for my Riken 13' Non Self Bailing Raft. This frame is superior to my old one in a couple of ways. This is really is a beauty of a boat, and perfect for the Blackfoot and other fishy locals.

I also sold my old Hyde Skiff this week, and am waiting to take delivery of a brand new Adipose Boat Works Boat, early next month.

Fishing reports are great statewide, but their is a brutal wind on the Missouri and Central Montana today, great time to tie flies.

Good Fishing reports abound statewide right now, ironically the Missouri is probably not the best option. I am chained to the fly tying bench this weekend, but come next week I will be fishing quite a bit. I still have a lot of availability through the spring, with May being moderately full. July is basically shot, and June and August still have pretty good sized holes during many historically great fishing times. Early season is awesome, but tough to sell, many clients and outfitters think that the fall fishing is superior to spring, I would disagree heavily. Spring fishing in Montana is awesome, pre runoff is occurring now, and it really is a great time to fish.

Spring Dry Fly Browns from last year; CLIENT CAUGHT!!!!! We don't take photos of every fish, and I don't pester clients for photos. Here are a couple!!!!!

The first week and second weeks of June were great last year, the water may be high, but the fish are eating regardless. Great time to pry our secret other waters. Fish will rise on the MO unless the flows are huge. If you like to catch big trout using a variety of methods (not strictly dry fly) this is a great time to come. If you want to get a little bit off the beaten path and fish in beautiful water, this is a solid time to come. During lower water years this is the best of the best.

Late May, Early June browns

All of August, can't say it enough, the best time to come during big water years. The crowds subside, and the fish really rise. I had dries on nearly all of August last year, with some amazingly good days. Other days can be slower, it is of course.... Fishing. Hopper fishing if it is warm and sunny, if it is cloudy our fish will rise freely.

Early Season fly fishing is some of the best of the year. The key is being flexible, and having the ability to read the weather and make decisions based on that.

I have heard excellent fishing reports, and experienced many first hand recently. If you have some time, and are flexible, early season is superior to other times in many other ways.

Very solid dry fly fishing yesterday on an undisclosed river. Probably 30 hits in 5 hours, a couple of very nice fish in the bag. Spring fishing is here, and yes, there are some better places to be than the cold Missouri right now. Not that the Missouri is bad......

Hyde Skiff for sale, this boat also has removable knee braces so anglers may either sit or stand, must be seen to be believed how nice this boat is. Working on getting some more photos, but check out my website; http://www.maddenflyfishing.com/ and you will get a rough idea. This boat includes a trailer and oars. Great deal, mostly used on the MO and shows very little wear.

This boat has low sides so it is very easy to row in the wind.

It is wide, so it is not tippy like a canoe, and can float in very little water.

This boat has lot's of rocker so we really never take too much water in (it has never been used in whitewater and the chines are in great shape)

Instead of having those narrow little round rod holders, this boat has 10 long trays that run down each side of the boat, you can place a rod, or grab another with minimal fuss. Unlimited storage found under three seats (boxes) and under the trays (rod holders) there is more storage.

I have rowed nearly every boat around, and find this style to be superior, once you row and fish out of one, I'm sure you will agree.

I went to the HB 309 hearing yesterday. There were certainly hundreds of opponents to this access limiting handout to the uber wealthy landowners of MT. In all it seemed as though both sides were pretty unorganized, but I certainly feel like we opponents got our points accross. The highlight for me was when the female house member asked "How many pictures of dead babies are we going to have to bring in before you make recreating in a ditch illegal?"
Now, it is already illegal to access ditches without permission, and I'm not sure how many babies..... Well I think you get the point.
I was supposed to fish today, but had to back out due to accruing work.

Frozen Tundra!!!!!!!!! A couple of more weeks until the fishing really starts. I have not heard of any fish midging yet, maybe in a couple of weeks. I find with a lot of outdoor activities a lot of people jump at the first opportunity to partake. The parking lots at the ski hills are typically full the first couple of weekends, and the same people who jump the gun aren't around in February and March when the Skiing is best. Same thing goes for fishing, let's wait till it gets good, and then go fishing.

I have been told there are a record number of people fishing this winter..... I say leave them alone, their metabolisms are low, it is cold and sometimes dangerous, it is mainly subsurface fishing, and even the rainbows don't fight. I would rather tie flies and work on equipment.

Hey stay the hell out of my River,,,,,, err Ditch.

Montana stream access law is once again being subverted by those who would love to see Montana's Stream access laws converted to an aristocratic version similar to England's.

House Bill 309 has passed in the Montana House and is on it's way to the Senate. HB 309 would move to reinterpret the definition of a ditch and a naturally occurring River. HB 309 includes natural streams that have been altered by irrigation structures or irrigation return-flows (think diversion's). What does that mean? Well I don't think anyone is completely sure, including the Bill's sponsor Rep. Jeff Wellborn R-Dillon.

If you put your boat in at a Montana FWP fishing access site, on a River that has been defined as a ditch, can you float? Probably not, and subsequently you probably wouldn't be able to fish around the public access on foot in the Stream bed, because that Stream bed or (ditchbed?) is private. Montana Stream Access Law is very clear on ditches, stay out, and trespass laws are in place. If Ranchers and Farmers are having problems with trespassers in ditches, there are already laws that apply. Of course landowners could provide permission to access private ditches, but in our highly litigious society, who could blame the landowner for withholding permission?

Fortunately there are still several hurdles left for this bill, and Hopefully Montana's Governor will veto it if it passes in the Senate. It could also be struck down in the Supreme Court, which has been proven itself to be aligned with the people in the past in regards to Stream access law. It recently ruled that Mitchell Slough a spring creek or arm of the Bitterroot, which runs through Rocker Huey Lewis' land in the Bitterroot Valley, was not an irrigation ditch as he purported, but a stream that the public could access legally. Many observers feel that this Bill is a reaction to that law.

I would contend that this law is actually quite more foreboding than overturning a Stream Access ruling on one small piece of water. I believe that this law is about making Money, and lot's of it. If a landowner could build a diversion, or ditch, which would in turn make the Stream flowing through their respective property private, it would enhance the value of the Ranch Property greatly. The number of Streams that this law would currently affect is limited, but the Montana Rancher and Landowner could make modifications to their land quite easily that would render their Stream private, and enhance it's value immensely.

All the guides I know are finally starting to talk about fishing again. Is it still to early? Yes..... Powder snow still covers the ski slopes, and I am much more comfortable driving by the river than I am fishing in it. During the next warm spell I will probably get out and wet a line....... 2/6 Bamboo CLASSICS

I inherited three bamboo rods this December from a longtime client who passed on. I am entertaining offers on one or two, but will surely keep one for a keepsake to hang on the wall.

The first rod is a Wright and Mcgill Granger made 9053 Aristocrat with the original tube and sock, perfect condition with two tips. All original, the photos don't do it justice.

This Rod is probably the pick of the litter. 8 foot 6 inch Wright and Mcgill Granger Rod, note that it still has the plastic on the rod grip, admittedly it is yellowing and cracking. This rod has been appraised by veteran rod builders and should bring a fairly hefty sum, it of course has two tips and is all original.

The last one is a 9 foot Orvis Model 99, really pretty straight forward single tip non-antique cane rod.

January is almost over, soon, in a couple of months we should have some pretty good fishing. I really can't get excited enough to wet a line this time of year, nymphing deep in the slowest water in the river, only fishing pink flies, Trout that don't fight, and just an all out bleakness. Why don't we go fishing when the fishing is good? Now that sounds logical. Come when it is warm and their are hatches.

I'm busy tying flies that work and are inspired from fishing the Missouri, not flies created however many miles away Thailand is.

I spun up a bunch of great streamers and nymphs for the Missouri today. I recently inherited a bunch of great tying supplies. I can only explain the collection in terms of square footage, it takes up about ten square feet. A lot is still in storage, and it truly took the Gentelman I got it from a lifetime to acquire it all. One of my favorite things in his collection was the Nor-Vise, a true rotary vise that spins around with the aid of a handle. The Nor-Vise makes spinning mind numbing flies like worms and streamers a breeze. It is a lot easier to spin a tiny handle than it is to wrap thread with a standard bobbin. Watching Norm Norlander use his Nor-Vise at a Fly Fishing Show is a spectacle to behold.

I like to start out tying San Juan Worms every season, and finished those last week. I usually need about 150-200. I start with worms, because if I subtly start with a ton of worms, I may never need to use them. Unfortunately with high lake levels, and good snowpack, I'm sure we will be using the dirt snake once again for at least a week or two. I have tied up a variety of nymphs, and tons of streamers. I tie about 6 different styles of streatmers in four or five different colors, and about a dozen of each.

Cold windy weather has been keeping me off the water for a while. Great time to tie some flies, and work on my boats. Over 100 days of guiding will put some wear on equipment, and I swear that I am the hardest person in the world on rubber rafts. I bought a brand new Riken last year, that was supposedly bomb proof, it is now getting three pretty significant holes patched. I also have new frame parts ordered, and the back seat will see some real improvements this year. My hard boat is another story, and is going to be back at the factory in Idaho next week.

Thanks to all of the people who came to see me at my booth in Denver, Colorado. The show was great despite a snowstorm on Sunday, thanks to everyone who attended my destination theater "The World's Largest Spring Creek - Missouri River, Montana". In the coming weeks you will see this page transform into more of a "Fishing Reports / Updates" page. It will always be linked to my new site at www.Maddenflyfishing.com. The world of the internet is still new to me, but I have some great help......

In terms of updates, here are some graphics from the latest fish numbers on the Missouri. While it may look as though there are a few less fish in the river, there is some data that is not included in the graphs. When Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks shocks the river, they only count fish over 10", the numbers of small fish left out of the graph is simply amazing, well over 1,000 small Rainbows (8-10 inchers) per mile in both sections. While I find it in poor taste to target these fish, as mortality is high in small trout, it does speak to the overwhelmingly great health of the Missouri. Huge numbers of small Rainbows are typical of years after high water. In 1998, which was the previous high water year, the numbers of small Rainbows were supposedly very similar. Look at what happened on the graph in 1999 just one year after a high water year, record numbers of Rainbows. Fishing over 5000 rainbows per mile would really change the fishery, while the Missouri is currently known for smart large fish, and 40 fish days being the exception, that would surely change in a river populated with smaller rainbows.

Missouri River, Blackfoot River, and Beyond!

Missouri River

The Mo is an absolute bug factory that drifts 32+ miles from rolling vistas to a craggy canyon, out into a spectacular prairie. With thousands of fish per mile and a huge river it is truly a delight to fish. With rising fish from the middle of April until November, there really aren't too many factors that can make the Missouri unproductive. My primary tactic is dry fly fishing and long floats so we can always be in fresh water. Despite the Missouri's world-renowned status, there are many days when we never see another boat. Unlike the waters surrounding Missoula and Bozeman, the Missouri doesn't get loved to death and it is big enough that even on a crowded day it is possible to fish in tranquility. If you find yourself paying a guide to take you fishing in crowded water you are making a big mistake. There is an amazing difference between sore-lipped trout that are terrified of flies, and fish that are relatively unmolested.

Rainbows and Browns range from 15 inches to well over 2 feet. Take a look at my photo gallery to look at some of these fish. The hatches on the Missouri are prolific and include Mayflies, Caddis, Midges, and a couple of Stoneflies. The terrestrial fishing is also great with Hoppers, Ants, and Beetles. I enjoy teaching anglers techniques and detailing intricacies.

Blackfoot River

I maintain the necessary Commercial Permits to guide on the Blackfoot River. The "Foot" is just over the Continental Divide from the Missouri, and offers a nice sideline from the hatch rich, sometimes technical Missouri. Beautiful and Wild, it hosts eager Cutthroat, Rainbow, Brown, and Bull trout. The hatches are not complicated, and a day throwing dry flies will often bring many small to medium sized trout to hand, at times it will bring many large fish to hand. However, anglers should adjust their expectations after fishing the Missouri. The Blackfoot was the setting for "A River Run's Through It" Norman Maclean's classic novella that was later Robert Redford's film adaptation starring Brad Pitt. A trip down the Beautiful and Pristine "Foot", throwing dry flies to a diverse population of trout in swift clear water is great for anglers of all skill levels.

Other Waters

Many other "local" rivers are floatable at certain times of the year and often provide great angling and a breathtaking experience. These same small rivers and "Notellum" Creeks offer great wade fishing after becoming too low to float. To outline more underfished venues on the internet is not necessary. Suffice it to say that there are some great small waters in the area.
I can also provide guide services on a host of other Montana Rivers, including the Clark Fork, Bitterroot, and many other Montana waters. If a client wants more of a total Montana experience, and fish many rivers during the same trip, this can easily be accommodated with a travel trip. I also gladly offer recommendations for other great Montana Fly Fishing Outfitters statewide.

Lodging

The Missouri River has many different lodging options to choose from. Starting with very comfortable 50 dollar a night hotel rooms to reclusive opulence in 1000 dollar a night unsold spec homes. Because I work independently of lodging providers, I am equipped for finding you the best place to stay for your vacation. Upon booking the trip, I will furnish you with information about the accommodations via email with plenty of pictures of the available options.

A note about all inclusiveness: It is possible for me to furnish clients with a private chef who will expertly prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I will disclose more information upon inquiry. In an all inclusive setting it would be possible to arrange a buy here/pay here (one check scenario) regardless of the number of guests.

While the photos on the right are great, check out way more photographs by clicking on the link below. These trout would be big anywhere in the world, they are all wild, and they eat dry flies. We tie 90% or our own flies, you can SEE them, and the fish want to eat them! Very few shop flies are tied correctly, and fly tying is unfortunately becoming a lost art. I tie all of my dry flies with an emphasis on visibility and flotation. Many of my patterns have been praised for their ingenuity, and companies have sought to commercially produce them. "But then what flies would I fish?" I prefer to keep my fly selection fresh and secret. Come fishing with me and try flies like the Slight Ant, Delta Wing, Hunny Caddis, 5th Beetle, and the CDC Bullet. I live in Tennessee but was in Montana between Helena and Great Falls in the summer of ‘08 checking out the area around the “Untouchables” bridge. I saw people float fishing down the Missouri in that beautiful stretch of the river. I told my wife that I wanted to do that and added it to by “bucket list”. She said “go for it”! I had an opportunity to return in 2009 and my wife reminded me of that thought. Not knowing any guides in the area, I “googled” trout fishing on the Missouri in Montana and found Trevor. I sent him an email telling him I was a novice at fly fishing with no equipment and asked for a price. I talked to some friends who are experienced trout fisherman in Montana and they advised me to go for it and I would not regret it! They were right! We met early that morning and within a few minutes of getting on the river, I was catching rainbow and browns beyond my wildest dreams! As other fishermen joined us on the river, we moved to other spots and continued to catch 18-22” trout almost every time we put a fly in the water. Trevor took good care of me and made sure my fishing time was maximized. We laughed and told jokes and he even laughed at my corny jokes about life in the south. We enjoyed the good lunch and plenty of cold drinks. After about 8 hours on the river, my arms were tired from hauling in fish.

Q. Because you don't have a lodge or fly shop, where do we meet in the morning?
A. I am capable of picking up clients anywhere between Helena and Great Falls. If you are staying on the river, we generally meet at your lodging. Clients often feel that they must rent a car; however, I am capable of picking you up at either airport and driving you around during your trip.

Q. What is provided in the boat?
A. I generally have lots of bottled water, soda, and a hearty lunch. I don't supply beer/alcohol, but you are encouraged to bring as much alcohol as the boat can carry. I also supply all leaders, tippet, and hand tied flies. Please let me know if you need rods and reels and I will gladly accommodate you.

Q. What should we bring?
A. You could bring nothing other than a Montana State Fishing License I can supply warm clothes if needed. Bring all rods, reels, flies, and personal items that you want. Our drift boats are state of the art, with plenty of dry storage.

Q. Can you always find us a guide?
A. No. If am booked and my close network of guides are booked, I will not farm you out to someone who I have no faith in. Many guides I hire are themselves licensed outfitters, to advertise them in this venue would be unfair to their own efforts to market themselves.

Q. What about gratuity?
A. Tip what you feel comfortable with. Gratuity should reflect the guide's promptness, ability, and effort. Restaurant percentages are a decent guideline.

Q. Could you describe a typical day?
A. You will meet your guide at a prearranged location. If you have a Montana State Fishing License, you will be ready to plan the rest of the day. I often say that the first decisions of a guide's day are the hardest. I would encourage you to be forthright and honest about your expectations. Then the guide can plan accordingly. Want to only fish dries? Do you want to be on a pretty float without many other boats? Do you just want to catch a fish? All of these expectations and more should be expressed to the guide at the commencement of the trip. This information will give the guide the opportunity to exceed your expectations. You will then float and fish for approximately 8 to 10 hours.

Rate Schedule

500 a day for three anglers to one guide ratio.

Cancellation Policy:

Guided trips require deposits that are collected and applied on a per trip basis. If you must cancel your guided trip(s) for any reason outside 30 days of your reservation date(s), a $50.00 handling fee will be charged per cancelled trip. Your remaining deposit will be refunded immediately. Cancelled trips inside 30 days of your reservation date will result in you forfeiting your your entire deposit. Partial cancellations will be subject to cancellation fees based upon the previous formula (cancellation fees are collected on a per trip basis). I reserve the right to handle cancellations on a case by case basis. Cancellations are very rare, my receipt of your deposit means you accept our Deposit & Refund policy.
